Playing outdoors at night

Tonight was men’s practice night at the club. That’s the night for men who play against other teams in a league (more about this some other time) to practice. The practice session lasts from around 7:30 pm until 9.00 pm at which point we retire to the bar to have a few beers and watch the football.

In an earlier post i have written about the different playing surfaces and how the club i play at has the all weather court surface which is good against the rain. This is mainly because the water drains away.

Needless to say nothing is perfect though as tonight illustrated well. The weather was windy (well gusty) and also wet though more like drizzle than heavy rain. This combination is quite difficult to play in for a couple of reasons:

Firstly the wind blows leaves from trees surrounding the courts onto the courts and the leaves and drizzle combination makes the court slippery.

and secondly the wind. I find wind more of an obstacle than light rain. Heavy rain is of course miserable to play in but gusty swirly wind is very destructive as it stops you from being able to predict where the ball will land.

Which just goes to prove that it might be almost possible to rain proof and outdoors court but it isn’t yet possible to wind proof them.

Anyway that’s all for now Mr Backhand.
